M+ is a museum dedicated to collecting, exhibiting, and interpreting visual art, design and architecture, moving image, and Hong Kong visual culture of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Located in Hong Kong’s WestK, we are one of the leading museums of modern and contemporary visual culture in the world. A motivated and skilled individual is required to assist with object installations for M+. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Installations and Displays, the appointee will work closely with the team of art technicians as well as external contractors to ensure safe handling, installation, lighting, packing, transport, and storage of works of art for M+. The Installation team works alongside the Production team to ensure the objects are installed safely according to the exhibition schedule. The ideal candidate should possess a passion for visual culture and ideally some experience installing objects and art in a museum, gallery, or other arts environment. With an attention to detail, manual dexterity and critical thinking, the individual should be highly organized and motivated to work within a team and with a desire to learn and grow their skills.

You will be responsible for:

  • participating in day-to-day activities of the Installation and Display team by safely handling (under supervision) a wide variety of works of art and ancillary collection material;
  • installing packing / unpacking, moving, relocating, transporting, and storing artworks across M+ sites and external commercial storage facilities to international conservation best practice standards;
  • working alongside and supervising external contractors and stakeholders when needed;
  • assisting the Registration team for the accurate tracking of the location of art moved during exhibition and storage works, adhering to museum best practice standards;
  • inspecting works of art prior to handling and reporting any suspected damage or deterioration in condition to the Senior Manager, Installations and Displays, the Registrar and the relevant Conservator;
  • complying with the principles of Occupational Health and Safety and manual handling guidelines, including the operation of power tools and equipment used within exhibitions and storage areas;
  • ensuring tools, equipment and storage areas are maintained in a serviceable order and tool and equipment inventories are fully stocked; and
  • assisting in ordering and procurement of tools and equipment and other specialised apparatuses for storage and exhibition spaces.


You should:

  • possess at least 5 subjects at Level 2 / Grade D or above in the HKDSE / HKCEE or equivalent academic qualification and a minimum of 1 year of full-time experience in providing technical support for art and design projects, preferably in museum, art gallery, cultural organisation or Fine Art Logistics company;
  • ORApplicants with a recognized university degree in fine art, design, engineering, or trade based background, and a minimum of 1 year of related working experience with expressive interest on working in the museum sector may be considered for the position;
  • have demonstrable knowledge and sound understanding of the principles and practices of Risk Management, Occupational Health & Safety and Manual Handling and the ability to apply them to Museum work practices;
  • have interest in art handling of museum / gallery exhibitions and experience in museum / gallery collection management systems, preferably The Museum System;
  • be confident to convey ideas and information via written communications in a clear and concise manner and able to establish and maintain relationships with people at all levels;
  • be able to liaise with stakeholders, use analytical and conceptual skills to reason through problems, identify and propose workable solutions to problems with creative ideas; and
  • understand and able to communicate in written and spoken English and Chinese;
