Duties
Laboratory Safety Unit (LSU) is a central university unit under the Office of Vice-President (Research) that oversees safety and regulatory compliance matters pertaining to teaching and research laboratory activities.
The appointee will support senior members of LSU to carry out responsibilities in relation to the services, projects, and programs run by LSU. He/she will take part in a variety of laboratory research safety and occupational hygiene programs and will be given the opportunity to receive appropriate professional development to gain relevant professional experience and qualify for different safety professional recognitions.
- Implementing safety management programs in laboratories (e.g. biological safety, chemical safety, radiation safety, laser safety, laboratory design, pre-occupation check, risk management and research safety, etc.);
- Conducting regular laboratory safety inspections and audits, investigating laboratory-related incidents and accidents, and preparing related reports;
- Maintaining the laboratory safety-related databases/systems/e-platforms;
- Delivering occupational hygiene program including respiratory protection and workplace hazard assessments etc;
- Conducting exposure assessments and evaluating health hazards;
- Providing administrative support to the daily operations of LSU and supervising a technical team to provide professional services; and
- Performing any other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- A Bachelor’s degree in Science/Engineering/Materials Science/Occupational Health and Safety/Occupational Hygiene or related disciplines with a minimum of 5 years’ relevant working experience;
- Good command of written and spoken English and Chinese;
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills; and
- Excellent quantitative, computer (e.g. Power Apps, Adobe Cloud) and analytical skills are required.
- Experience in tertiary institutions, statutory bodies, government agencies, or international-sized organisations with laboratory facilities is an advantage.
- Possession of relevant safety credentials such as CIH, CSP, CMIOSH, or CHMM is a plus.
Shortlisted candidates may be invited for a written test.
Salary and Conditions of Service
Remuneration package will be highly competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Appointment will be made on a fixed-term contract; fringe benefits include gratuity, leave, medical and dental schemes.
