The Hong Kong Academy of Sciences, established to enhance the development and advancement of science and technology in Hong Kong. Purpose:
We are seeking a seasoned, visionary and insightful Deputy Secretary General who is passionate about science education to join us for a rewarding and meaningful career journey.
Scope of Work:
The Deputy Secretary General will assist the Secretary General in managing ASHK and its young chapter, advocating for our mission and expanding our outreach. The scope of management will include both the secretariat office and the Community Education Center. The appointee will be responsible for executing the directives of the Board of Directors, its committees and working groups, and managing member-related matters. He or she will act as secretary for the relevant committees. The appointee will have to devise both short-term and long-term plans and science outreach strategies to maximise social impact increase community involvement. He or she shall review and refine internal procedures from time to time to ensure compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements. In addition to performing administrative functions, the appointee will also be assisting with project management tasks. The appointee will have to oversee and optimise the functions of event management, which includes planning events, managing personnel, coordinating logistics, managing budgets and resources, and maintaining positive relationship with stakeholders. Other responsibilities include promoting events, growing brand’s presence, managing risks and enhancing the experience of attendees. The appointee shall provide guidance and support to assist his or her team members in achieving their highest potential.
Requirements:
Applicants should possess a bachelor’s degree or above, preferably in fields such as science, journalism, event management, business administration, or other relevant discipline. A minimum of seven years of relevant experience in senior management or executive roles is required. Applicants with a robust background in NGO management, public administration, or charity sectors are preferable. Applicant should have proven strong leadership with strategic mindset and influencing skill. This position requires sound knowledge in managing government-funded projects, leading medium and large-scale events, and handling complex cross-sectoral projects with diverse stakeholders, including government officials, NGOs, academies, and business sectors. Applicants should have demonstrated ability to communicate, build and maintain positive relationships with people at different levels. Applicants with a strong understanding of the science industry, youth market trends, and government policies, or those with years of experience in administering youth development and community education programmes, will have an advantage. Excellent command of both spoken and written English and Chinese (Cantonese and Putonghua) is essential for this position. Working in irregular hours (including evenings, weekends and holidays) may be required on occasion.
Terms of Employment:
The appointment will be made on a 24-month fixed-term contract renewable subject to performance, availability of funds and other relevant factors. Salaries will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The ASHK secretariat practices a five-day work-week and offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package, including medical and dental care, generous annual leave, and contract-end gratuities. These terms are subjected to revision.
