Job Description

South Island School is seeking to appoint a Food Technician who can support the Design & Technology faculty to facilitate exceptional learning outcomes and also support the Textile Technicians.

Responsibilities

Main Duties:

  • Prepare food materials and teaching resources for Food lessons
  • In-class support as and when required
  • Maintain the hygiene and housekeeping of the Food rooms and assist with cleaning up when necessary
  • Source vendors, purchase food items and equipment for the Department; prepare purchase orders and supporting procurement documents in line with the school Procurement Policy
  • Organise and manage food storage and teaching resources effectively and economically
  • Assist with maintenance of display work in the Food area
  • Assist in preparing Food resources for school events and extra-curricular activities
  • Provide all-round administrative support to the Department
  • Maintain an accurate inventory equipment record for the Department and ensure equipment is well maintained to meet the Health and Safety requirements
  • Arrange maintenance and repair of equipment
  • Perform any other duties as and when assigned by Line Managers. This may involve rotation of duties among Faculty staff for breadth of knowledge and experience as a means of attaining good teamwork and fulfilling objectives for training and development
  • Provide support to the Textiles technician as and when necessary

Annual Tasks:

  • Empty and clean refrigerators and freezers
  • Source quotes for machinery and equipment that needs replacing
  • Stock count of department machinery and equipment
  • Thorough checking and deep cleaning of all equipment in Food rooms
  • Organise the Food storage room
  • Cost out each recipe and calculate the required budget for the following year

Termly Tasks:

  • Assist with noticeboards and room displays; Maintain display areas
  • Provide assistance on KS4 field trip for Food classes
  • Stock count of ingredients and expiry dates

Daily Tasks:

  • Assist in preparing materials/ingredients resource trays for students before the lesson commences
  • Calculate the quantity of ingredients required for each food lesson from individual food order forms placed by students
  • Place perishable food orders daily.  Liaise with reputable suppliers who offer good quality products for delivery at the most competitive price
  • Purchase ingredients directly from specialist suppliers
  • Provide Filing, photocopying and laminating services for to support all Food classes
  • Complete department ledger and communicate regularly with the school Finance Office regarding expenditures
  • Complete and submit expense claim forms on behalf of the Food teaching staff
  • Maintain the environment in a tidy, orderly and safe condition at all times
  • Liaise and speak to the teachers and staff when necessary
  • Prepare orders and equipment required for Food related events and extra-curricular activities
  • Weekly Sterilization of kitchen utensils using dishwashing machines

Requirements

  • Diploma in relevant disciplines 
  • At least 2 years of relevant working experience

Abilities:

  • Spoken and written English is a must
  • Good ICT skills
  • Excellent general practical skills
  • Problem-solving skills and ability to work independently
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritise tasks using time management so that all lessons are supported and run smoothly with the correct Food Resources

Knowledge:

  • Good knowledge and understanding of Food Hygiene and Safety. Further training will be provided
  • Excellent initiative, interpersonal, communication and organisational skills
  • A friendly and confident manner in relation to staff and students is essential
  • A reputation for being punctual, reliable, flexible, resourceful, hardworking and dedicated to the responsibilities that this post involves

Development Activities & Relevant Courses:

  • To be negotiated as part of the performance management process
