The Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies (CBS) is one of the constituent departments of the Faculty of Humanities, specialising in language sciences with a diverse and comprehensive focus. With a team of over 50 committed academic and teaching staff members, CBS serves as a thriving hub for cutting-edge, interdisciplinary, and multidisciplinary research across various domains, including Chinese linguistics, corpus and computational linguistics, language and communication disorders, cognitive neuroscience, translation and interpreting, bilingual communication, Chinese language education and testing, and language technology and data analytics. The Department is now seeking to expand its strengths in the areas of language data analytics and computational linguistics, embracing the latest advancements and methodologies in artificial intelligence and big data analysis. It is also devoted to offering high-quality programs at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels in Chinese Linguistics, Chinese Language Teaching, Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, Speech Therapy, Translating and Interpreting, Bilingual Corporate Communication, Generative Artificial Intelligence in Humanities, as well as Korean/Japanese language and culture courses at the bachelor's level. Within the Department, there is a PolyU- PekingU Research Centre on Chinese Linguistics, a Speech Therapy Unit, a Research Centre for Language, Cognition, and Neuroscience, and a Centre for Translation Studies. Duties
The appointee will be required to:
(a) conduct teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
(b) coordinate and supervise student seminars and tutorials at undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
(c) contribute to teaching, learning and scholarly activities of the Department;
(d) carry out academic and administrative duties as required;
(e) promote student language skills through technology-enhanced language teaching methods; and
(f) perform any other duties as assigned by the Head of Department or his/her delegates.
Qualifications
Applicants should:
(a) have a doctoral degree or an equivalent qualification, preferably in Computer Science or related disciplines;
(b) have teaching experience in Computer Science, GenAI and Natural Language Processing;
(c) possess at least three years of post-qualification relevant teaching experience at the tertiary level;
(d) be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in teaching; and
(e) have a good command of both written and spoken English.
Conditions of Service
A highly competitive remuneration package will be offered. Initial appointment will be on a fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract. Re-engagement thereafter is subject to mutual agreement.
