1. Job Description
The role of the Laboratory Technician is essentially to assist the Teachers in the delivery of the education program within the classroom and support the activities within and outside the classroom to ensure students are safe, happy and learning in a positive and nurturing environment.
We seek a dynamic, enthusiastic and talented Laboratory Technician [all subject specialisms will be considered]. This candidate will be responsible for managing and maintaining the lab facilities, tools, and equipment, and assisting students and staff in the execution of projects and experiments using various biology, chemistry, and physics experiment supplies. The ideal candidate will have experience working within a lab, a passion for science, and an ability to work collaboratively with students and staff.
The successful candidate will be able to help students understand lab experiments not only as subjects of academic study, but as a way of discovering scientific truths within our environment. Applications of science will be realized through observational science and its documentation, hands-on biology dissection experiments, building physical machines and rockets, calibration of equipment and materials. The candidate will work with our science teachers to support learning in an interdisciplinary manner, for example, linking biology to nutrition as we create our vertical farm, applying physics to design paper rockets as we celebrate NASA or China Space Days, and turning chemistry into an art form when students make their own lava lamps. Some of our laboratory classes will be conducted in a studio format that address specific career pathways and industry-based exploration and learning such as medicine or urban design.
The Laboratory Technician will play a crucial role in supporting our STEAM program through teaching and managing the Chemistry and Physics labs professionally. Students will have the opportunity to collect raw data, contribute original knowledge to the scientific community, and act as citizen activists. 2. Key Responsibilities
- Support in regular teaching and in the day-to-day operations of the school lab spaces
- Work with the STEAM team to ensure that the labs meet appropriate safety standards, are well-maintained, and that all necessary materials and resources are ordered, organized and stored appropriately
- Ensure the successful implementation of lessons by supporting teachers in the execution of an engaging and dynamic program
- Maintain chemicals, materials, and hardware, including tools, robotics, STEAM kits and other lab equipment
- Maintain an environment on campus and online that encourages learning, prototyping, sharing of ideas, productive failure, thinking, documentation, sharing, and collaboration
- Assist in maintaining reports and statistics that correspond to the labs and to assist in training for teachers in the use of the facilities
- Track, document, maintain inventory and service records, and purchase new consumables on a regular basis
- Participate in planning meetings and safety measures
- Support laboratory project exhibitions and presentations
3. Person Specification
Essential
- BSc in sciences or related fields and demonstrated academic excellence
- VTC lab technician certification
- Experience working in laboratories, chemistry or biology labs preferred
- Experience with common laboratory techniques such as handling agar, microbes, enzymes, microscopy and/or HPLC, fNMR, IR spectroscopy
- Strong familiarity with educational technology, especially Google Suite, Google Science Journal, etc
- Native or near-native English and strong written and spoken communication skills. As our school will be bilingual, Putonghua is an advantage
- A commitment to innovative and future-focused education including project-based learning
- Satisfactory criminal background check
Highly Desirable
- Valid teaching certification, Teaching Assistant (TA) experience in a school or university
- A commitment to remaining in Hong Kong and to see through the initial development phase of the school
- Experience in handling IGCSE/IBDP labs/EE projects
- Experience in using CLEAPSS
- Knowledge of common laboratory techniques such as handling agar, microbes, enzymes, microscopy and/or HPLC, fNMR, IR spectroscopy
- Commitment to continuous professional development
