Job Description

Island School is a highly successful IB secondary school located in the heart of Hong Kong. Over 1300 students aged 11 to 18 study an innovative and exciting curriculum combining our self-designed courses, the MYP, IGCSE, and IB programs. 

The post holder will be responsible for coordinating the IGCSE programme in the English Learning Area. Duties include complying with all the administrative requirements of the Cambridge exam board and organising internal assessment arrangements. It also will involve leading staff in designing an innovative and comprehensive teaching programme. It is expected that the post holder will lead the internal ongoing professional development of staff in delivering IGCSE First Language English and IGCSE World Literature and any other courses that may fall within the responsibility of this Phase.

All TLR responsibility holders have a teaching responsibility and are layered on top of a main scale teacher’s job description. 

Responsibilities

  • Leading the specified phase or curriculum area in developing and improving teaching and learning. For this position, this will be the Year 10 and 11 phase in the English department
  • Monitoring/evaluating the development of teaching and learning in the specified phase or curriculum area and coordinating with other Phase leaders to ensure Curriculum alignment and progression
  • Contributing to, supporting and implementing the English Development Plan for the Year 10 and 11 phase
  • Implementing departmental intervention strategies for students in Year 10 and 11 in English
  • Supporting the School Performance Management system for the curriculum area and completing Performance Management interviews as required
  • Communicating and liaising effectively within the specified phase/curriculum area and with others in the school and its community, i.e. Head of EAL, SSS and Exams Officer
  • Running effective meetings, standardisation and moderation sessions and providing agendas and minutes of these meetings
  • To be up to date with changes and information from the Cambridge exam board relating to both IGCSE courses and communicate this with the team
  • To step in and support the other Deputy Head of English in the absence of the HOD
  • Implementing all agreed school policies and actively promoting a whole school vision
  • Take responsibility for the coordination of the planning of Units of work and managing resources in the IGCSE English programs
  • Collaborating with other Hexagon/curriculum areas to develop cross-curricular links

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, or
  • Bachelor’s Degree in any subject and a PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate of Education) or equivalent
  • Proven experience in teaching English at the secondary level within a recognized educational organisation, preferably within an IGCSE/  IB school setting
  • Previous leadership experience in an educational setting is preferred
  • Strong understanding of current pedagogy, with excellent practice exemplified in own teaching
  • Strong leadership and organisational skills with the accountability of professional reflection and development (PRD) within the team
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be able to work effectively as part of a team
  • Proficient and experienced in utilising data analysis and learning technologies
  • Commitment to contribute to the extra-curricular activities of the school
  • Commitment to fostering an active and creative learning environment
  • Commitment to professional development and collaboration across the school
