We are now looking for a suitable person to fill the following position in the School of Nursing and Health Studies:

Course Developer: Psychology and Sociology (Mental Health Care) (Freelance) (N&HS) (Ref: 25000KY)

 

Course Code: NURS 2407NED

Course Title: Psychology and Sociology (Mental Health Care)

 

The appointee will assist in the development of NURS 2407NED: Psychology and Sociology (Mental Health Care) for the School of Nursing and Health Sciences on a freelance basis. The medium of development is English.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities

The appointee will be responsible mainly for the following:

  • Revising the existing syllabus and course contents as directed;
  • Developing updated learning materials;
  • Developing assessment items (including specimen paper, assignment questions, examination paper and  their corresponding marking schemes) to enhance students’ learning experience; and
  • Preparing a course guide for the re-developed course.

 

Candidates

Candidates should possess the following qualifications, experience and competence:

  • A higher degree in Psychology, Sociology or a related field;
  • A good command of written English;
  • Preferably with experience of participation in activities related to teaching in health-related discipline;
  • Preferably with experience in teaching distance learning and / or part-time courses;
  • Previous involvement in developing course materials for higher education institution is desirable.

 

Background

NURS 2407 NED is a 6-credit unit course spanning over two terms. It is a middle-level course in the Bachelor of Nursing (part-time) programme, designed basically for Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) students seeking to obtain the Bachelor of Nursing Studies (Mental Health Care). This course aims to equip students with concept and knowledge of the psychological and sociological factors that influence mental health and nursing practice. The course seeks to develop critical thinking and analytical skills, enabling students to understand and assess mental health, and address the mental health needs of individuals.

This integrated structure provides a comprehensive framework for the course, covering essential psychological and sociological concepts related to mental health care. The contents are systematically organised and discoursed in 10 study units. The course prepares the students for roles in mental health care where they can apply both psychological and sociological insights effectively.

This course fosters critical thinking and analytical skills, enabling students to effectively assess, intervene, and support individuals facing mental health challenges. Ultimately, the course prepares students to deliver compassionate and effective mental health care within diversity of clients.

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding on the history and background, different approaches and cultural issues of psychological theories and perspectives to human development, health behaviour and illness;

2. Integrate theoretical perspectives of sociology and its understanding on health behaviour and illness;

3. Apply psychological and sociological theories to analyse social phenomena, impacts of ill health and understanding of mental disorders.
